A picture tells a thousand words. Look at the unanimous smiles on everyone’s face
in the “TV Talk Show” held at the Speaker’s Club on the Valentine’s Day of 2005.

The club kicked off the first of its projected series of special “Table Topics Sessions”
for the year 2005 -- Toastmasters International TV Talk Show. Planner of the event
– Jane Yang, assigned “homework” to members over the weekend to catch up with
who’s who and what’s going on. Each member received a list of Celebrities, a list of
TV Hosts and related links to browse some stories. No one was supposed to know
who he or she would be, but given a role on the spot. Pretty much members came
with a “see-what-happens” mood.
Marty MacPhail, the president of the club, stirred a wave by disclosing in advance
that a celebrity, a friend of his, would show up for the night as a special guest, and
asked members to get ready for a signature and pictures, however no name was
given. What a dangle!
Jane Yang announced the rule of the game – the Host has to be mean while the Guest
tries to survive with a smile. Each host was required to give a little opening speech,
introduce the show, the guest, ask two questions and conclude the program. Each
guest was required to answer two questions. Each pair has 2 minutes to complete the
show.
Big Surprise! As soon as Mrs Herman was introduced by Fashion TV’s Jeannie
Becker (Bonnie Dell) and entered the room with exaggerated “face”, costumes and
impressive “legs,” there were voices whispering “It’s Marty!” After all, who else can
be that tall? Unforgettably, Mrs. Herman invited everybody to take a picture with
“her,” which has become the first group picture of Speaker’s Club for 2004 - 2005.
Later on, the club had Dr. Phil (Don Kent) interview Prince Charles (Charles Smith,
what an coincidence!) and Jay Leno (Paul Sylvestervich) interview Camilla Parker
Bowles (Shirley Grebinsky). Don and Paul were the very first two hosts in the whole
world who actually got the hottest couple at the moment exposed on the screen. It
was amazing to find out that Prince Charles did have a sort-of British accent and the
lovely Camilla was quite philosophical by concluding her interview as “if you love a
person enough, you will eventually have him (Jack shall have Jill, all shall be
well…)”
David Letterman (Fred Irving) interviewed big guy Ming Yao (Mark Wen); Larry
King (Bruce Keen) interviewed Condoleezza Rice (Sue Yao, you were quite a
political woman, did you notice that?); Barbara Walters (Mary Kerkhof) interviewed
North Korean leader Kim Jong Il (Kurt Yao); Oprah (Brenda Stefanovska)
interviewed Michael Jackson (Kaleem Momin, wow, those dancing moves were so
Michael Jackson, but sorry, not the “nose” part); Muchmoremusic correspondent
William Wei interviewed Jacky Chan (Paul Du); Conan O’Brien (our brave guest
Nelson of the night) interviewed Hilary Clinton (Erin Hui).
The Best Host Award went to Bonnie Dell, and the Best Guest Awards went to
Charles Smith (your accent paid off), Sue Yao (your political dream did impress us
much) and Kaleem Momin (thanks to your dancing talents).
Isn’t it fantastic to have a chance to be someone else? Exactly, when life lacks some
fresh air, we need a chance to tap our potentials, have some extraordinary funs, and
take the liberty to be bold, wild and passionate! We did it. Congratulations!
